TAKORADI STARTUP SUMMIT: DIGITAL MEDIA FOR BUSINESS AND JOB CREATION IN THIS ERA

In the early morning of July 2,2021 at exactly 11:02am Ghana Tec Lab commenced their Takoradi Start up Summit with the theme “Digital Media for business and Job Creation in this Era”. This program took place at the Takoradi Library in the Grace Angel Conference Centre. It begins with a discussion on the topic “Digital Media and how it affects the local ecosystem and it was done with four panelists representing four groups, Mr. Philip Darko, Mr. Sylvester, Miss. Chelsey Sey and Mrs. Kumson.

According to Mr.Philip Darko who is into Tourism said because of digitization the economy is moving from physical cash payment to cashless (payment through digital platforms) and as an entrepreneur, you are supposed to use these social media platforms and Apps to make money. According to Mrs. Chelsey Sey who is a media person at Yfm also said there are other platforms which are also good for entrepreneurs aside from the social media we know and these platforms help in giving the acquired skills to those on the platforms.

According to Mr. Sylvester who is an IT expert, social media has its own advantages and disadvantages based on how the user uses the App and also encourages the upcoming entrepreneurs to use it as their daily source of income. On the program list has a Team Pitch where the upcoming entrepreneurs have to compete among themselves. By convincing an investor to invest in their business ideas.

 

The competition was between four(4) groups and their names are ; Harvest Media,Digimart, 2Page Media and West Media. It was a tough competition but there has to be a winner. They were scored based on their presentation of their business ideas and class score.

Some of the topics the groups talked about were; “Developing weak or poor selling brands and poor management of websites”, “Tourism is underutilized”, ” Facilitate access to load quality movies in Ghana”. There were judges for the presentation and they were;

  • Miss Gifty (A lecturer at Takoradi Technical University)
  • Miss Chelsey Sey (Presenter at YFM, Takoradi)
  • Mr. Philip Darko (Co-founder Tukwan)

Citation was given to these  judges after the show by the managing director of ICODE.

The occasion ended with 2 pages emerging as the winner of the day with 70 points, Digimart, West Media, Harvest with their respective positions.

According to the organizers of the program it wasn’t easy getting all these young entrepreneurs on board through training. They encountered difficulties but they thank God for making the program a successful one.
