On Friday, 11th September, 2020, ICODE Hub in partnership with Ghana Tech Lab, under the Pathways for Sustainable Employment, organized the very first Takoradi Startup Pitch Summit to give the opportunity to nineteen young individuals to pitch their tech businesses.
The event which was held at the Grace Angel conference room, follows a six-weeks intensive web development training at ICODE.
The Pathways to Sustainable Employment PaSE, is a project by the MasterCard Foundation Young Africa Works, the World Bank and the Ministry of Communications Ghana.
The purpose of the project is to create employment for the youth between the ages of 18-30 years, hence the project is targeted at unemployed youths in the region. The participants were taken through a six-weeks intensive training on web development to give them skills that can either help them start their own businesses or become employable.
The summit was graced by the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko. In his opening remarks he shared his own personal experiences on how he started his own business and how he financed the business. He also noted that just a few people get the opportunity to work in the government sector and the majority are in the private sector, he drove his point home by emphasizing on the need for people to create businesses to be able to employ others to help reduce the unemployment rate. He also shared his enthusiasm about technology and how happy he was to be at the summit to witness the pitch. He commended ICODE for the good work they are doing in the community and encouraged people to go to them if they need help. In his final words, he assured that his office is opened to help startups who seek for help from his office to help grow their business.
The Keynote speaker for the day, Mr. Sharaf Deen Okyere, who is a Software Development and Engineer Facilitator at Amalitech Training Institute, spoke on the theme ‘WEB TECHNOLOGY AND ITS POTENTIAL IN TAKORADI’S ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM TO ACCELERATE THE CREATION OF JOBS’, he also led a panel discussion around the same topic, the panel discussion was made up of 4 panelists who are from tech backgrounds and tech entrepreneurs. The panelists were, Mr. Sharaf Deen Okyere, Mr. Nana Baisie, who is the Director and Project Lead at LoGig, Mr. Ralph Menz, he is the C.E.O Naa Sika and AdFocus, Ms. Maxlyn Chelsy Sey, the Host of Ryse N Shyne and PillowTalk on YFM.
The nineteen trainees from the training formed groups of two, making 10 groups. Three best teams with innovative ideas were awarded that day but the best 2 teams were selected for ten weeks incubation at ICODE.
The two teams will be supported with everything they need to build their business. Support such as finance, office space, mentorship, coaching, design thinking to help them build their prototypes and other supports they will need to help kickstart their businesses.
